Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 series competes directly with Apple’s iPad Pro line, offering a compelling alternative for Android users. The standout in this lineup is the Tab S9 Ultra, priced at $1,199.99, featuring a stunning 14.6-inch display—the largest in the series. This powerhouse tablet comes equipped with an S Pen stylus, a high-performance processor, impressive battery life, and seamless integration with Samsung smartphones, making it a top choice for productivity on the move. Although the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is priced higher than both the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro ($1,099) and the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 ($999), it stands out as the premier choice for those seeking a large Android tablet. However, it’s worth noting that Android’s performance on tablets can sometimes be less polished, despite Samsung’s efforts to optimize the experience.

Go Big or Go…Slightly Smaller

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is a sophisticated tablet that manages to house a 14.6-inch display within a surprisingly compact design. With dimensions of 12.85 by 8.21 by 0.21 inches and a weight of 1.61 pounds, it offers a large screen without being overly bulky. In comparison, the Lenovo Tab Extreme, priced at $949, features a slightly smaller 14.5-inch screen but comes in a slightly larger frame, measuring 12.9 by 8.3 by 0.23 inches and weighing 1.63 pounds. For those who find the Ultra too large, the midsize Galaxy Tab S9+ offers a 12.4-inch screen, measuring 11.23 by 7.30 by 0.22 inches and weighing 1.28 pounds. The more compact Galaxy Tab S9, with its 11-inch display, measures 10.01 by 6.53 by 0.23 inches and weighs 1.10 pounds. The entire Galaxy Tab S9 series is available in two color options: Beige and Graphite.

For the first time, the Galaxy tablet lineup, along with its included S Pen stylus, boasts an IP68 rating, signifying its dust and water resistance. This means that all three Tab S9 models can withstand submersion in water for up to 30 minutes and can be easily rinsed clean when needed. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, which, although not the latest version, is durable enough to survive drops from nearly four feet onto hard surfaces and offers scratch resistance. Unlike the Lenovo Tab Extreme and iPad Pros, which lack IP ratings, the Tab S9 series stands out in this regard, making it an excellent choice for use by the pool or at the beach.

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra features a 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a resolution of 2,960 by 1,848 pixels, a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and a peak brightness of 930 nits. With its 16:10 aspect ratio, the display is expansive, but its reflective nature can make outdoor use in direct sunlight challenging. Indoors, the screen brightness is sufficient for typical lighting conditions. The display also includes an in-screen fingerprint sensor located near the USB-C port, which performed reliably during testing. The tablet has a notch along one of its longer edges, housing two 12MP front-facing cameras—one with a standard view and the other with an ultra-wide view. If the notch’s appearance bothers you, you can hide it by adding a black bar at the top (Settings > Display > Camera cutout), though this needs to be done on a per-app basis. Despite the notch, it generally doesn’t interfere with the content and is easy to overlook

Good Cameras

In bright conditions, the 13MP main camera and the 8MP ultra-wide rear camera on the Tab S9 perform admirably. Consistent with other Samsung devices, colors can be slightly oversaturated, but the images retain good detail. However, in lower light settings, the performance of the rear camera module diminishes, resulting in some blurry details. Interestingly, tablet photography remains a rare sight, and using this 14.6-inch tablet for taking photos even drew curious glances from passersby in New York City.

Speedy Connections, Loud Speakers

The Tab S9 Ultra features Bluetooth 5.3, an upgrade from the Tab S8 Ultra’s Bluetooth 5.2, enhancing the experience for private listening since the device lacks a headphone jack. It supports Wi-Fi 6E but does not have NFC capabilities. Among the three models, only the Tab S9+ offers an optional 5G cellular connection.

During testing, the Tab S9 Ultra achieved peak download speeds of 492Mbps and upload speeds of 22.6Mbps when connected to a Wi-Fi 6 access point. The slower upload speed is attributed more to the ISP than the tablet itself. In comparison, the Lenovo Tab Extreme recorded download speeds of 490Mbps and uploads of 23.3Mbps under similar conditions. When moved to the furthest distance from the access point, the Tab S9 Ultra’s speeds decreased to 76.4Mbps down and 4.12Mbps up, whereas the Tab Extreme dropped to 71.1Mbps down and 14.8Mbps up. Overall, the Wi-Fi performance of both Android tablets is quite similar, with the Lenovo Tab Extreme showing a slight edge at the network’s edge.
